Violence against women in Mexico rises to over 70%, study finds

Violence against women and girls in Mexico has increased over the last five years, the statistics office said in a survey that found seven in 10 of them reported experiencing some form of violence. “Violence against women continues to be a challenge in the country and constitutes a public health problem,” the president of the national statistics agency INEGI, Graciela Marquez, told a news conference on Tuesday. Mexico’s soaring rate of femicide – the killing of women and girls because of their gender – has sparked waves of protests. On average, some 10 women have been killed every day and tens of thousands are missing. INEGI estimated that more than 70% of 50.5 million women and girls aged over 15 have experienced some kind of violence, up four percentage points from the last time it ran the survey in 2016. Reports of sexual violence increased the most, up eight percentage points to reach half of all women surveyed; 23% of whom said they had experienced this in the last 12 months.

Snap Inc (SNAP.N) said on Wednesday it will lay off 20% of all staff and shut down projects, including mobile games and novelties like a flying drone camera, as high inflation and a deteriorating economy ravage the advertising industry. The cuts will help the company save an estimated $500 million in costs annually, Snap said. Snap shares rose 15% in morning trading, which reverberated across the sector. Govt sets up flood relief helpline

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information and Technology (MOIT) Tuesday established an emergency helpline 911 for flood-hit people across the country, ARY News reported. The flood victims have been asked to report needed assistance such as medicine or food through the national emergency helpline 911. Tens of millions of people across swathes of Pakistan were battling the worst monsoon floods in a decade, with countless homes washed away, vital farmland destroyed, and the country’s main river threatening to burst its banks. The United Nations (UN) issued a flash appeal for $160 million to help Pakistan cope with catastrophic floods that have killed more than 1,100 people and affected 33 million people. “Pakistan is awash in suffering,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a video message for the launch of the appeal in Islamabad and Geneva. He further said: “The Pakistani people are facing a monsoon on steroids – the relentless impact of epochal levels of rain and flooding.”

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to issue the permit within 24 hours for importing the stocks of onion and tomato at the earliest, ARY News reported on Tuesday. The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has decided to issue import permit for onions and tomatoes within 24 hours. The ministry forwarded the recommendations to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). According to the food ministry, taxes and levies will not be imposed on the imports of onions and tomatoes. Earlier, the Ministry of Commerce decided to import onions and tomatoes from Afghanistan and Iran to control soaring prices in the country. KP govt sets up relief fund for flood affectees

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan announced on Saturday establishing a relief fund for the assistance of flood-affected people, appealing to the citizens, especially the philanthropists, to generously donate to it. The cash assistance for flood victims can be deposited in the Bank of Khyber Account No. PK32KHYB0015002008365353. The CM said the KP govt would not leave its people alone during these testing times. The rescue and relief operations are underway in flood-affected areas of the province. U.S. suspends 26 Chinese flights in response to China flight cancellations

The U.S. government said on Thursday it will suspend 26 China-bound flights from the United States by four Chinese carriers in response to the Chinese government’s decision to suspend some U.S. carrier flights over COVID-19 cases. The decision will affect flights by Xiamen, Air China (601111.SS), China Southern Airlines (600029.SS) and China Eastern Airlines (600115.SS) from Sept. 5 to Sept. 28. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) cited the recent cancellation of 26 American Airlines (AAL.O), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) and United Airlines (UAL.O) flights over COVID-19 cases. The suspensions include 19 China-bound flights from Los Angeles and 7 China Eastern flights from New York. Islamabad: The federal government on Friday announced the deployment of Armed forces in all four provinces to assist the civilian authorities in rescue and relief operations in flood-affected areas, ARY News reported. According to details, the interior ministry has issued the notification for the deployment of the armed forces in all four provinces of the country.  The armed would assist the civilian administrations in carrying out relief and rescue operations. Pak Army, cabinet to donate one-month salary for flood victims

ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Army officers and all federal cabinet members have announced to donate one month’s salary to flood victims. According to the statement issued by military’s media wing, army officers have deposited one month’s salary in the flood relief fund while others are also giving financial donations on a voluntary basis. “All General Officers of the Pakistan Army (all Brigadiers, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals, and Generals) have donated one month’s pay to go towards relief and humanitarian aid/ration packages for flood-affected families in Pakistan,” the ISPR statement read. Schools closed for two more days as rain emergency declared across Sindh

The Sindh education department on Thursday announced that all private and government schools and colleges in the province will remain closed for two more days on Friday (Aug 26) and Saturday (Aug 27) due to the current flood situation and rain emergency In a statement, Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah said that several districts in the province were facing floods because of which most of the schools and colleges had been submerged with rainwater. “The same have also been turned into relief camps for the flood affectees,” he said, adding that in that view it had been decided to keep educational institutions closed. Court suspends Thailand PM from office

BANGKOK: Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha from office while it considers a legal challenge that could see him thrown out months before an expected general election. The court agreed unanimously to hear a case brought by opposition parties who argue Prayut has reached the end of his eight-year term limit as prime minister. Judges also agreed by five votes to four to suspend Prayut from office until the case is decided, the court said in a statement. “The court considered the petition and supporting documents and deems the facts according to the request indicate reasonable grounds to suspect that there is a case as requested,” the statement said. “Thus, a majority vote (five against four) for (Prayut) to be suspended as prime minister, effective August 24, 2022, until the court issues a verdict.” Prayut, who will continue in his role as defence minister, has 15 days to respond to the case against him.
