Broad seals England win as Ashes series ends 2-2

Image
England’s Stuart Broad claimed the last two Australia wickets to secure a dramatic 49-run victory for his team in the final Ashes test at The Oval on Monday and leave the series locked at 2-2 after five gripping matches. Broad, playing his final test, removed Todd Murphy and Alex Carey, both caught by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, to dismiss Australia for 334 and deny them their first Ashes win in England since 2001. Australia, who won the first two tests and had already retained the urn, moved on to 238-3 chasing 384 to win before a two-hour rain delay halted progress and England took the last seven wickets in just over two hours to earn a famous victory. Chris Woakes was the pick of the England bowlers with figures of 4-50 and Moeen Ali took 3-76 before the 37-year-old Broad completed the job in a perfect swansong two days after announcing his retirement. Usman Khawaja made 72, David Warner 60, Steve Smith 54 and Travis Head 43 for Australia. from ARY NEWS https://ift.tt/Lzkec

Eight trapped in Indonesia gold mine feared dead

BANYUMAS: Eight people trapped in an illegal gold mine on the Indonesian island of Java are feared dead, a local rescue official said on Sunday, as search efforts entered a fifth day with little progress. Unlicensed mines — many with disregard for basic safety measures — are common across the mineral-rich Southeast Asian archipelago and accidents are frequent. The workers were digging inside a hole with a depth of 200 feet in Pancurendang village in Central Java on Tuesday evening when water suddenly flooded the illegal mine. Rescuers had deployed water pumps around the clock and worked to dam a nearby river in a frantic bid to get the water out of the mining shaft but it remained flooded on Sunday. “This is already the fifth day. We expect the bad news that the victims have died,” local search and rescue agency head Adah Sudarsa told reporters on Sunday. Sudarsa said the rescue effort would continue until Tuesday in the hope of retrieving the miners’ bodies, which are yet to be fo

In a detailed Twitter message, Faisal Vawda blamed the prominent political leaders for political instability in the country. He said that political leaders cannot put the country on the right path when they cannot adopt a concrete stance. He alleged that Khawaja Asif admitted that Nawaz Sharif used Qamar Bajwa’s name in public rallies to build a narrative for toppling the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government and later urged the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) lawmakers to vote for then army chief’s extension. “On the other hand, the PTI chief also gave an extension to Bajwa and later built an anti-government narrative. Asad Qaiser calls for end to ‘propaganda’ against PTI, demands free and fair elections

PTI leader Asad Qaiser on Saturday called for an end to what he called was ongoing “propaganda” against his party, and urged for “powerful quarters” to ensure free and fair elections in the country. In a video statement, Qaiser, who unlike many of his peers did not leave the PTI in the aftermath of the May 9 violence, said: “The one-sided propaganda under way against the party and Imran Khan at this time, what do those in power and the PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement) group think? Do they think they can eliminate the PTI through such propaganda? “It is their misunderstanding. The more negative propaganda they are doing, the more the PTI is becoming popular,” he said as he criticised the incumbent government’s performance and questioned whether it had managed to tackle inflation and improved governance during its tenure. “Show us one sector in which we can say the PDM has shown [good] performance. These 14 months were the worst disaster that is why I want to say to the powerful sec

PTI’s Asad Umar questions former FBR chairman Shabbar Zaidi’s default claims

Image
PTI leader Asad Umar challenged former chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Shabbar Zaidi on Friday over his claims of the previous PTI government nearing default during Umar’s term as the finance minister. Umar was responding to an interview of Zaidi on Geo News programme ‘ Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath ’, in which the former FBR chairman said that he had warned former premier Imran Khan about his government nearing default in an April 2019 meeting. Zaidi said that subsequent to his alert, Imran had called Umar to confirm if it was true to which the then-finance minister said: “Yes it’s right.” Zaidi claimed the PTI chief had then asked Umar why he had not informed him about the possible default, to which Umar had said: “Sir, I believed you knew.” The former FBR chairman said Umar was removed as the finance minister shortly after this exchange. Contesting his claims before the complete show was aired, Umar asked Zaidi from where he had concocted the story about the

Niger military council takes control, names General Tiani as leader

Leaders of a coup in Niger declared General Abdourahamane Tiani as the new head of state on Friday days after saying they had ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in the seventh military takeover in West and Central Africa in less than three years. The upheaval has raised concerns about the security of a region where Niger has been a key ally of Western powers seeking to contain insurgencies by groups linked to Al Qaeda and the militant Islamic State. Tiani was the head of the presidential guard whose soldiers shut Bazoum inside his palace on Wednesday, leaving confusion over who was in control. The general appeared on state television on Friday with a banner on the screen that described himself as the president of a newly formed military body, the National Council for Safeguarding the Homeland (CNSP). “The President of the CNSP is the head of state,” an officer said, reading out a statement. The constitution has been suspended, all government institutions dissolved and the CNSP will e

UK climate campaigners fear net zero policies under threat

Image
Britain’s climate change mitigation policies could be under threat as political concerns over the country’s cost-of-living crisis, energy prices and other factors collide with the aim to decarbonise by mid-century, observers say. Fears that so-called green policies, such as phasing out the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 and gas boilers in accommodation, could be downgraded or delayed were stoked by a surprise by-election result last week. The ruling Conservatives defied months of dismal national polls to retain Boris Johnson’s vacated northwest London parliamentary seat with a narrow 495-vote victory. Political analysts blamed Labour mayor Sadiq Khan’s plan to extend a scheme taxing the use of the most polluting vehicles, known as the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). The High Court on Friday upheld the legality of his expansion, set for August 29, but the electoral fallout appears to have spooked both Tory and Labour strategists ahead of an imminent general election

Son confesses to killing mother, sticking her body parts in fridge

Image
A man in his mid-30s in Belgium has confessed to killing his mother and sticking parts of her body in a fridge found in a canal in the country’s east, prosecutors said Friday. The refrigerator with its grisly contents — two arms and two legs — was found Tuesday bobbing in a canal on the outskirts of the city of Liege, triggering a murder investigation. That led detectives to discover the rest of the woman’s body — her head and torso — in a trash container thrown in a nearby river. A tattoo on the torso helped identify the victim as a woman in her 70s, a spokeswoman for the Liege prosecutors’ office told AFP. Her son, born in 1988, was arrested just before dawn on Thursday in a hotel close to Brussels’s airport. He apparently was preparing to take a flight to South Korea, the spokeswoman, Catherine Collignon, said. Under questioning by police, the man “confessed”, she added, and the investigating judge ordered him charged and taken into custody. Early indications in the investig

But judge Timothy Fancourt ordered that Harry’s case can go to trial, concluding NGN had “succeeded in part on its application” related to time limits around alleged phone hacking but “failed on the remaining part”. Hugh Grant learned in May that he had won his court bid to bring to trial his claim against NGN, while other high-pro
