Pakistan, rise in financial losses, first half of financial year

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Finance has issued the economic report for the first six months of the current fiscal year, revealing a 2.3 percent increase in financial losses, reaching a surplus of Rs. 1.812 trillion, ARY News reported on Monday.

In comparison, during the same period last year, the financial loss was recorded at 2 percent. The report highlights an improved fundamental balance, reaching a surplus of Rs. 1.812 trillion.

The report revealed that the defense expenditures witnessed a significant surge, rising by 19 percent and reaching a total of Rs. 758 billion, meanwhile, the loan provision of Pakistan reached Rs 4.22 trillion with an increase of 64 percent.

Additionally, the petroleum revenues showed a substantial increase, rising by 166 percent to reach Rs. 473 billion.

According to the report, the federal tax revenue experienced a 30 percent growth, totaling Rs. 4.469 trillion. Meanwhile, provincial tax revenue saw a 20 percent increase, reaching Rs. 365 billion.

The budget deficit was reported at Rs. 1.799 trillion, fully covered by domestic loans, with Rs. 442 billion obtained through external loans.

Pakistan plans to transform optical fiber cable network into global digital gateway

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Dr Umar Saif on Wednesday said that the government had finalized a plan to transform Pakistan’s optical fiber cable network into a global digital gateway. The implementation of the proposed project would benefit Pakistan by millions of dollars, he disclosed while speaking in a high-level meeting. The meeting was attended by representatives of key organizations, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Special Communication Organization, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL), TransWorld, and CyberNet. Progress made on Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project

ISLAMABAD: Progress was made on Pakistan and Iran gas pipeline project as both countries agreed on reviving the stalled cooperation and formal contacts will be started within a few weeks. It is pertinent to mention here that Iran gave Pakistan time until September 2024 to complete the project, otherwise, it may move to international arbitration for the breach of contract. Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir, the Chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Petroleum said that both sides will start formal contacts for the gas pipeline project within two to three weeks. The Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project has faced many delays due to the risk of US sanctions on Iran. The project remains substantially delayed.
