Avalanche risk, bad weather disrupt climbing season in Gilgit-Baltistan

GILGIT: Climate change-induced shifts in weather patterns have worsened conditions on the peaks of the Karakoram Range in Gilgit-Baltistan, creating serious difficulties for mountaineers. No climber managed to summit the world’s second-highest mountain, K2 (8,611 metres), or Gasherbrum-I (8,080 metres), this summer. Around 40 foreign climbers also failed to reach the summits of Gasherbrum-II (8,035 metres), Broad Peak (8,047 metres) and Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres) this year. Persistent storms, heavy snowfall, unstable snow conditions and an exceptionally high avalanche risk created hurdles for climbers attempting to summit peaks in Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly five of the 14 eight-thousanders. No climber managed to summit K2, Gasherbrum-I this summer Expedition teams usually spend weeks at base camps assessing weather forecasts, fixing ropes and acclimatising before beginning their summit push. Mountaineers have experienced persistent bad weather, avalanches, rockfalls, stron...

Govt opts for high-level talks as strike strains ports

• Federal minister Aleem Khan, Sindh governor to meet goods transporters in Karachi • Security authorities join efforts to help break deadlock ISLAMABAD: With congestion beginning to build at the ports due to a pile-up of containers, the eight-day strike by truckers and edible oil tankers could end on Sunday (today) following a crucial round of talks at Governor House in Karachi between senior federal and provincial government officials and representatives of the transporters. Sources in the federal government told Dawn that the prolonged disruption and its impact on trade had prompted official efforts to resolve the dispute, with security authorities also becoming involved in attempts to break the deadlock. “The concerns of the striking truckers and edible oil tankers are genuine, but the government too has its procedural limitations,” a senior official said, adding that the transporters were seeking a strong guarantor regarding implementation of any agreement. Morocco arrests 111 migrants headed for Spain's Ceuta in security crackdown

Image
Moroccan police arrested at least 111 people on Saturday as they tried to enter Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta , amid tightened security on both sides of the border after social media posts called for another mass migrant crossing. The attempted crossing came two weeks after more than 72,000 migrants surged into Ceuta, sparking tensions within the European Union and fuelling anti-immigration rhetoric among far-right parties worldwide. At least 96 people died in the attempt to reach European soil. A source in Morocco’s Interior Ministry told Reuters those detained included 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens arrested in or around Fnideq, the Moroccan city opposite Ceuta. According to Spanish news agency EFE , Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse groups of migrants gathered on hills about 3km from the border. Reuters later saw hundreds of police officers, some in riot gear and others in plain clothes, returning from the hills outside Fnideq. ...

Footprints: SPEAKING URDU IN XINJIANG

Sunny (Rahiman Ma) in the front joins in a Mongolian folk dance during a visit to the Xianghe community in Urumqi. —Photo by the writer “ASSALAM-o-Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah-i-Wa Barakatuh.” This is how our tour guide greets us soon after landing at Urumqi Airport. She introduces herself as ‘Sunny’, and then tells us that her given name is Rahiman Ma. “You are Muslim?” I ask. “Alhamdolillah yes,” she smiles and nods. Urumqi, the capital and largest city in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwestern China, has an estimated population of 4.4 million people including a robust Muslim population of Uyghur, Hui, Mongols, Kazakh and Kyrgyz Muslims, that amounts to around 12 per cent of the city’s total number of people. Over the course of the next three days, I encounter many more Muslims in the city, as well as several others with Muslim-sounding names who said that they don’t follow any religion. I also notice some Arabic writing along with the Chine...

Taliban support

THE latest UN monitoring report analysing the activities of several transnational terrorist groups is unequivocal in its assessment: the Afghan Taliban “have continued their support” to the banned TTP. Though the report says that the regime in Kabul has taken some tepid steps to control its TTP comrades, this is clearly not enough, as the continuing reign of terror orchestrated by the TTP in Pakistan shows. Moreover, the document also confirms that Taliban-ruled Afghanistan remains a safe haven for a number of lethal terrorist groups, posing a grave security challenge to regional countries. These outfits include IS-K, Al Qaeda — which includes AQIS, its Indian subcontinent arm — and ETIM. The report says that IS-K poses the biggest threat to both the Taliban regime and the broader region, despite suffering setbacks due to the kinetic action taken by Pakistan as well as Kabul. Some parts of the report deserve particular attention. For example, it says...

Pakistan Army Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi has been appointed the new force commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN announced on Thursday. According to Pakistan’s mission, Major Gen Qazi has previously served in senior leadership roles, including command, staff and instructional positions, both in Pakistan and abroad. AJK outlook

AS the staggered polls for the AJK Legislative Assembly enter their final stretch, it appears that the PML-N is in a commanding position, and is already working on a governance plan for the region. Marred by violence as well as allegations of rigging by the PPP — the PML-N’s coalition partner at the centre — these polls have not been without controversy. Re-polling will be held at some polling stations in Bagh over the weekend, while votes will be cast in seven constituencies of Poonch division on Aug 20 or Aug 21 . Polling was postponed in these constituencies due to the volatile law and order situation. The AJK polls have exposed a widening gap between the PML-N and PPP, with the latter claiming that the AJK Election Commission had not ensured transparent polling. PML-N leaders, however, have downplayed these concerns, saying that their party head Nawaz Sharif will choose the next AJK prime minister. While the PML-N’s lead looks unassailable at this...

AJK polls: Rathore’s LA-17 Haveli victory disputed, local PML-N announces indefinite strike

MUZAFFARABAD: A controversy emerged on Wednesday after the returning officer (RO) issued Form 27 declaring PPP’s Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, the sitting AJK prime minister, the winner from LA-17 (Haveli), despite rival PML-N candidate Engineer Mohsin Aziz being assured that the form would not be issued until the Election Commission took up his complaint. The development triggered fresh tensions in Haveli district, where PML-N workers announced a complete shutter-down strike and protest from Thursday (August 13) for an indefinite period. At a meeting in Forward Kahuta, chaired by PML-N Haveli president Syed Abid Bukhari, participants demanded that the Election Commission open all polling bags from LA-17, order a recount and determine the result on the basis of the original results issued by presiding officers at the polling stations. They warned that the scope of the protest would be expanded if the demand was not accepted. Polling in the constituency had been held on Monday amid seriou...

Mideast outreach

OVER the past few days, Pakistan has been going the extra mile to assure Iran that the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement it signed last week with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye poses no threat to Tehran. In a recent telephone call, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi that the pact is “not an instrument of confrontation”. Moreover, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the cabinet that the agreement is “entirely for defence purposes”. Tehran seems to have understood the messaging, as the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said his country had no reason to believe the pact was aimed at encircling it, and that it showed that countries of the region could not depend on the American security umbrella. Perhaps the reason for speculation surrounding the deal was the mutual defence component, which says that an attack on one signatory is an attack on all. Considering the targeting of US military assets in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf st...

Why the Middle East war still convulses the oil market

After more than five months of conflict, oil markets continue to surge and tumble over the latest developments in the US-Iran clash, including United States President Donald Trump’s shifting pronouncements. What is behind the market’s volatility? The ‘shock’ of Hormuz While the potential vulnerability of the Strait of Hormuz has long been viewed as a risk, oil markets have still been caught off guard by Iran’s ability to largely close the crucial waterway . “What really shakes the market are surprises… and the Hormuz closure was a shock,” said Jim Burkhard, head of global energy crude oil research at S&P Global. Brent oil prices surged more than 13 per cent in the immediate aftermath of the US-Israeli siege against Iran on February 28. Since that time, prices have been jolted in both directions as the conflict has dragged on. “Number one, it’s the complete unexpectedness, unfamiliarity with what we are seeing,” Bob McNally, president of the Rapidian Energy Group and a forme...

DawnMedia to host ‘Act for Nutrition’

KARACHI: As Pakistan faces one of the gravest development challenges of our time, DawnMedia is set to host a landmark national conference on malnutrition and stunting. ‘Act for Nutrition’ will be held on Sept 2 and 3 at the Serena Hotel, Islamabad, to shed light on “the emergency we can no longer ignore”, DawnMedia said in a statement. According to the statement, about 40 per cent of children in Pakistan under the age of five are stunted, while the country has one of the highest child malnutrition numbers in the world. “Maternal malnutrition, widespread micronutrient deficiencies, food insecurity, poor infant feeding practices, rapid population growth and persistent poverty continue to reinforce a cycle of deprivation that spans generations,” the statement said. According to recent estimates, Pakistan loses nearly $17 billion annually due to the economic consequences of malnutrition and undernutrition. Recognising nutrition as fundamentally an economic, governance and develop...

Govt leaves petrol, diesel prices unchanged for Aug 11

The government on Monday kept the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel unchanged as Platts prices were not published on August 10. Petrol will continue to be sold at Rs327.62 per litre, while HSD will cost Rs380.86 per litre. The government continues to levy Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on HSD. According to the Petroleum Division’s notification, the new prices will be applicable on August 11. The price of HSD has come down from a peak of Rs520.35 recorded on April 3. Its price had started rising from Rs281 per litre after the US-Iran war broke out on February 28. The petrol price had peaked at Rs458.41 on April 3 after beginning its upward trajectory from Rs266 in the first week of March. Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would now be fixed on a daily basis due to fluctuations in international market prices following renewed hostilities between Iran and the US. The government had been announcing w...

Revival of SME credit

Between July and August, things are brought to almost a halt across much of Europe. Italy shuts down for Ferragosto, the French vanish on les grandes vacances, and the German offices empty out. During this window, everything — deadlines, emails, occasional sovereign crisis — can wait. For Pakistani economy nerds, late summer means something completely different, though no less exciting if you are warped enough. It’s because by this time, the data for fiscal year-end starts being released, giving a complete picture of how things panned out. Of all the numbers that land in this season, it is banking that appeals to me the most for a multitude of reasons. For starters, it has had quite an enviable run the past few years and remains highly profitable even as other parts of the economy struggle. Second, its data reporting is relatively richer and granular than most other sectors. Starting with the liabilities side, total deposits reached Rs39.8 trillion by FY2...

Movement restricted under Section 144 in some areas of South Waziristan, Tank on Monday

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: The administrations of Lower South Waziristan, Upper South Waziristan and Tank have imposed Section 144 in several areas of the three districts for August 10 (Monday), citing security concerns and directing residents to avoid unnecessary movement during the specified hours. Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) is a legal provision that empowers district administrations to prohibit an assembly of four or more people in an area for a limited period. The deputy commissioners (DCs) of the three districts issued separate notifications on Sunday evening, imposing restrictions on movement between 6am and 7pm, as well as ordering the closure of markets and business centres in the specified areas. The administrations of Upper and Lower South Waziristan have also directed motorists to stop their vehicles at least 50 metres before reaching security personnel and for all passengers to get out of the vehicles. They warned that unauthorised movement or violation...

SC sets aside orders to restore BISP retailer’s blocked ID

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Saturday ruled that a complaint filed by a Point-of-Sale (PoS) agent against the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) over the blocking of his retailer ID was not maintainable under consumer protection laws, as the relationship did not constitute a “consumer service” arrangement. A two-judge SC bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, issued the verdict on an appeal filed by BISP Deputy Director Muhammad Ishaq against the Nov 6, 2025 order of the Peshawar High Court, Bannu bench, in a consumer protection appeal. The Supreme Court, however, set aside the judgements of the Consumer Protection Court, Bannu, as well as the PHC, which had earlier directed the BISP and Bank Alfalah to restore the agent’s ID. “We held that [the] complaint under Section 13 of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Consumer Protection Act of 1997 was not maintainable,” observed Mazhar in a 14-page order. Rules Point-of-Sale agent cannot invoke consumer law However, in the interes...

Voting on remaining AJK Poonch division seats may be held by Aug 20-21, says CEC

MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said on Saturday that the Election Commission had decided, for security reasons, to first complete the electoral process in four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli districts and hinted that polls in the remaining seven constituencies of Poonch division could be held by Aug 20 or 21. Talking to a group of journalists at his office, he said the commission would be in a position to announce the election date for Poonch and Sudhnoti within the next seven days, adding that voters in the two districts would have to be given time to campaign. Poonch division, comprising 11 constituencies — three in Bagh, one in Haveli, five in Poonch and two in Sudhnoti districts — has a total of 1,154,626 registered voters. Monday’s polling, however, will be held in four constituencies in Bagh and Haveli, where 460,371 voters — 238,664 men and 221,707 women — are eligible to cast their ballots at 803...

KP amends controversial law on lawmakers’ privileges

• Provisions for lifetime blue passport scrapped; number of lifetime arms licences for MPAs reduced to four • Assembly resolves to resist ‘proposed takeover’ of Hazara areas by federal government PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly on Friday withdrew controversial provisions from the recently enacted KP Provincial Assembly (Powers, Immunities and Privileges) Act, 2026 , including the issuance of official passports to lawmakers and their spouses for life. The provincial assembly had earlier in April passed the KP Provincial Assembly (Powers, Immunities and Privileges) Act, 2026, granting blue passports to members and their spouses, arms licences, blanket immunity from preventive detention, and making the speaker’s permission mandatory before arresting members on criminal charges. However, the law faced harsh criticism from the media and the general public, prompting KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to order a review of the legislation last week. KP Information Minister Shafi ...
