Hong Kong, economy to grow, financial chief

Hong Kong’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow between 2.5% and 3.5% for the first quarter, maintaining moderate growth for a fifth consecutive quarter, the city’s finance chief said on Sunday.

January-March GDP, scheduled to be released on Thursday, is expected to be “within the range of the full-year economic growth forecast”, Financial Secretary Paul Chan said in his blog, opens new tab without elaborating.

Chan in February forecast full-year growth for the Asia financial hub of 2.5% to 3.5% after a 3.2% expansion in 2023.

As Hong Kong seeks new sources of growth points, mega events such as fireworks will be held to lure more tourists, Chan said, adding that 800,000 visitors are expected to visit for China’s labour day holiday on Wednesday.

Pakistan plans to transform optical fiber cable network into global digital gateway

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Dr Umar Saif on Wednesday said that the government had finalized a plan to transform Pakistan’s optical fiber cable network into a global digital gateway. The implementation of the proposed project would benefit Pakistan by millions of dollars, he disclosed while speaking in a high-level meeting. The meeting was attended by representatives of key organizations, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Special Communication Organization, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL), TransWorld, and CyberNet. He said that all the necessary resources and facilities had been provided for the digital gateway initiative. Progress made on Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project

ISLAMABAD: Progress was made on Pakistan and Iran gas pipeline project as both countries agreed on reviving the stalled cooperation and formal contacts will be started within a few weeks. It is pertinent to mention here that Iran gave Pakistan time until September 2024 to complete the project, otherwise, it may move to international arbitration for the breach of contract. Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir, the Chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Petroleum said that both sides will start formal contacts for the gas pipeline project within two to three weeks. The Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project has faced many delays due to the risk of US sanctions on Iran. The project remains substantially delayed.
